Network Operating Systems
Windows

Novell is going, going, gone as far as we can tell.  They are completely focused now on Linux.   Windows 2003 server put the nail in the Novell coffin and continues to be excellent in the Windows Server 2008 version released this past spring.  There is also the Small Business version of Windows 2008 Server which is very robust and affordable and should be available this fall.  In the meantime, Small Business Server 2003 is just fine.

Laptop, Desktop, and Workstation Operating Systems

  • Windows Vista (Yes, upgrade as best you can afford)

  • Windows XP Professional (SP3 is fine but very hard to get, does not come pre-loaded on any new systems)

  • Linux ? (not for CPA firms and may never be)

Windows Vista is our current recommendation for desktop software for CPA firms as you approach tax season this year.  We also recommend that all firms get at least one Vista system to start with and begin testing software and for compatibility issues with clients.  All of the top software publishers claim their software was Vista compliant this past tax season and we have not heard any significant reports of ANY issues with Vista.

Vista Compatibility with Older Software

You will almost certainly need to get a virtual machine working for older legacy applications on a Vista machine.  Your choices are:

VirtualPC – Microsoft – Free

VMware Workstation – VMware - $189 (not free but much better device handling, file sharing, networking, etc.)
