Office 2007 Backward File Compatibility

Word 2007 will open WordPerfect 5.x and 6.x files, but will not save in those formats. Quattro Pro for Windows 5.0 and 7.0 files may be opened but not saved in Excel 2007. Support for 1-2-3 finally bites the dust. 

Here’s the short list of Word file changes.

The following formats cannot be opened or saved in Word 2007:

  • MS Works 4.0
  • MS Works 2000
  • Windows Write
  • Other obscure formats 

The following formats may be opened, but not saved to in Word 2007:

  • Word 97-2000 & 6.0/95 RTF (combination format)
  • WordPerfect 5.x
  • WordPerfect 6.x

Here is a comprehensive list of Excel file changes:

The following formats cannot be opened or saved in Excel 2007:

  • WK1 (1-2-3)
  • WK4 (1-2-3)
  • WKS (1-2-3)
  • WK3 (1-2-3)
  • WK1, FMT (1-2-3)
  • DBF 2 (dBase II)
  • WQ1 (Quattro Pro/DOS)
  • WK3, FM3 (1-2-3)
  • Microsoft Excel Chart (.xlc)
  • WK1, ALL (1-2-3)

The following formats may be opened, but not saved to in Excel 2007:

  • Microsoft Excel 2.1 Worksheet
  • Microsoft Excel 2.1 Macro
  • Microsoft Excel 3.0 Worksheet
  • Microsoft Excel 3.0 Macro
  • Microsoft Excel 4.0 Worksheet
  • Microsoft Excel 4.0 Macro
  • Microsoft Excel 97- Excel 2003 & 5.0/95 Workbook (combination format)
  • Microsoft Excel 4.0 Workbook
  • Quattro Pro 5.0 (WB1) (with converter)
  • Quattro Pro 7.0 (WB3) (with converter)
  • DBF 3 (dBase III)
